A new baby takes up a great deal of your time and energy. Many mothers feel that their spouse does not require constant care so they slack on the attention given to the spouse. Nurturing your relationship after your baby is just as important as nurturing your newborn. The birth of the baby is a pivotal time in a relationship. Neglecting your relationship after the baby may spell trouble.
Some mothers may feel resentment towards their spouse when he is not helping out as much as he can. This issue definitely needs to be addressed and worked out sooner rather than later.
Being a new mother can be a difficult experience because it is so demanding. The mother is pulled in so many directions that she doesn’t know which way to turn. The bulk of her time is taken up caring for the baby, then there could be other children to care for, the spouse requires a portion of time and there has to be time for the mother herself. All of these factors can impact a marriage after the baby is born.
While it may take a little work, realizing that having a happy and strong marriage after your baby will make your entire life run smoother. It is going to take time and effort, but you must learn to understand that spending time with your spouse is just as important as spending time with your baby.
The first thing that both of you must be willing to do is make a commitment. Make a commitment to each other that no matter what you will spend time together. This can be a little bit of time each day or a “date” night once every few weeks. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy and extravagant. After putting the baby down to sleep for the night, the two of you could watch a movie together. Take time to sit down as a family for dinner each night and this is a wonderful way to spend quality time together.
Show affection to your spouse every day. Believe it or not, that big, strong man may be a little jealous of all of the time that you spend cuddling and hugging on the baby. It doesn't take much time or effort to make your spouse feel cared for and loved. Hold hands while sitting on the couch or give frequent hugs or gentle pats throughout the day. Actions speak louder than words, and these simple acts can truly go a long way in improving your marriage after the baby.
Take the baby in the stroller for a walk with your spouse. You can get some light exercise in while spending quality time with your spouse.
Remember that this is a stressful time for your spouse as well. He has been used to having you all to himself and this sudden shift of attention to your baby may very well have a negative affect on him. By making sure that you give your spouse some of your attention everyday, you can improve your relationship and help make your marriage after your baby a happier and stronger.
