How much newborn size clothes do I need?

Here again, be smart.  Get clothes that you will get the most use for and easy to put on and take off.  Since you will be doing lots of diaper changing, you will need to have clothes that are easy on easy off.  Simple cotton onesies (or undershirts with snap-bottom) are absolutely essential.

They are light and comfortable for babies.  Get ones with buttons on the crotch area and not on the back.  Same applies to other clothing articles.  Since babies lay on their backs most of the time, it may be uncomfortable for them.

Onesies are also good to layer under other clothing for extra warmth.  Cotton gowns and sleepers are nice to have in the non cold months.  Polyester blends are better for colder months.  Gowns are   especially easy to use for either girls or boys.

They go pass the baby’s feet and bunch up at the bottom.  All you have to do is lift up to the waist with very few buttons to open.   Try to resist from getting too much of those cute outfits that you might only put on baby only once before it is too small.  Newborns out grow their clothes before you know it.

For those essential pieces, expect that you will go through at least 2 outfits a day.  Due to diaper leakage or spit ups, there’s always a need to change baby’s entire outfit.  Another item to have plenty of are burp towels.

For most bottle fed babies, spit ups occur often when burped so be ready to catch it before it lands on you or your carpet.  Here is a list for a starter wardrobe.  Quantities depend on how often you do laundry.

7 to 10 undershirts ( sometime called onesies)– Pullovers with snap-bottom body shirts don’t ride up and keep tummies covered.  Open-front, side-snap styles are popular too with newborns.  They are easiest to use with newborns.

4 to 8 gowns with drawstring bottoms or with elastics – Ones with elastic bottoms are easiest to use.  Drawstrings should be removed as baby becomes more active.

4 to 8 sleepers – These are the one piece outfits with footies built-in.  In warmer weather, light cotton ones would be a good choice.  In colder weather, thicker styles are better.

3 to 4 pairs of booties or socks – select ones that won’t kick off easily.

4 to 6 washable bibs – you’ll need plenty of these for spit ups or when baby feed from bottles.

4 to 6 burp towels – you’ll need plenty of these for spit ups or when baby is burped.
